Horse Mounted Police Researcher
I am a retired Sheriff's Captain, and I am researching horse policing in California, and the United States. If the project goes well, I would like to expand into other countries using mounted law enforcement. I am looking for information, pictures, stories, training materials and tactics for mounted police units.
I am currently involved in a mounted civil war reenacting group, portraying Company F of the 7th Michigan Union Cavalry Regiment. Many of our 1860's formations and tactics reoccur in mounted police deployment. Here's a genuine U.S. Cavalry hardtack recipe!
I am looking for anything that could be used in a historical and reference publication concerning police horse units.
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR:
- Historical narratives of law enforcement mounted units, i.e. I've made contact with the San Francisco Police mounted unit, and officers from Memphis, Detroit, Boston and other major cities that go back to the middle 1800's.
- Photographs, drawings, sketches of police horses, riders, equipment, training and funding (government or private). I want to offer as many graphics as possible in the final publication.
- Short stories about police horses, officers, units or incidents in which mounted units excelled. This would also include traditions of mounted officers and units.
- Training materials for police horses and officers. Among the items I've located are U.S. Army training films dated in the early 1940's. I also came across some information from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police while researching the Library of Congress.
- Tactics for mounted police officers and units. So far "Cook's Cavalry Manual of 1860" can be found in most police formations at the squad and platoon level.
- Anything else you might find interesting or useful in a documentary and reference publication. One item people may find curious is/are the variety of different types of units in current service, and which law enforcement agencies have funded mounted services.

WHAT'S IN THIS FOR YOU?:
- If you are a horse lover: Help others to understand how the horse is still a valuable asset (with a personality) to law enforcement.
- If you are or were a law enforcement officer: How a horse is a working partner, who will lay down their lives for their rider! Courage is a common virtue of the police horse. I'd be proud to honor any "Police Horse" who, for special reasons deserves recognition in this collection of references.
- If you are a history buff, with an interest in cavalry: Police tactics and formations are based in part on the experience and knowledge of cavalry troopers. The modern law enforcement horse person still carry on many traditions of the cavalry.
- If you're someone with stories; pictures or references about horse policing: This project is a labor of love. Your input could give others the pleasure of your information and leave a police horse story for others to enjoy.
Since starting our research, we have made friends with over 200 mounted units and officers in the United States, Canada, Europe, Russian Union, South Africa, South America and Australia. Myself, and many of our new friends, are members of the International Police Association. This is a great group of people in law enforcement. Oh, by-the-way, do you know what. "Traveling IPA" means?
All contributors will be recognized in the research section, with respect for persons who want privacy.
